Signs of easing decline in major economies, with key economic indices rebounding, have led to the hope that the downturn is bottoming out. The more optimistic are even proclaiming a recovery, deemed by others to be too soon for an economic downturn widely regarded as the steepest and gravest in recent history. The more pessimistic point to the continuing emergence of bleak news clouding the horizon. Asian retailers are obviously anxious and hopeful that the “green shoots” of economic recovery are real so that the consumer market would in turn pick up soon. However, anxiety and hope must be tempered with realities. by Steven HL Goh
